Simran is a 40-year-old Punjabi woman who came to Sakhi not knowing exactly what domestic violence was. She knew that she was being beaten up and verbally abused but did not realize that the rape that happened every single night was also abuse. She thought that she was obligated to give in to her husband’s demands whenever he wanted. She did not know she could have control over her own body. Despite the fact that these rapes took a toll on her physical and emotional health, she still hesitated to acknowledge it as violence.

Sexual assault and rape are a form of domestic violence. Your intimate partner does not have the right to sexually subject you. Rape and sexual assault is against the law, even when you are married.

If this is an emergency situation, please dial 911.
