Create Change

Take Charge

At Sakhi we believe that violence can end only when community members take charge and say NO to violence – at all times, in all places, and against anyone.

The following links are some of many ways that YOU can help create change – and be part of a community movement to take charge and end domestic violence.

16 Days of Activism to End Gender Violence Campaign

16 Days of Activism to End Gender Violence is a global campaign to end violence against women. The 16 Days campaign began on November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women, and ended on December 10, International Human Rights Day. These two dates symbolically link violence against women and human rights, emphasizing that gender violence is a human rights violation. The 16 Days originated from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. For more information on the campaign, go to http://www.cwgl.rutgers.edu/16days/about.html.

This year, as part of the global campaign, we asked members of the Sakhi community to share their thoughts about activism and violence against women. We sent selected responses for each day of the campaign by e-mail. Listed below are the questions which participants answered:

1. What does activism mean to you?

2. Why is activism for women's rights important?

3. How is violence against women a human rights issue?
